Top Arab Region Universities
Global higher education experts, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, have unveiled the 10th edition of the QS World University Rankings for the Arab Region in 2024.
This year’s ranking, which assesses institutions on criteria such as global recognition, research excellence, teaching resources, and international engagement, is the largest ever, featuring 223 institutions from 18 Arabic countries.
According to the rankings, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals has risen to the top spot as the leading university in the region, advancing from its third-place position in the previous year. King Saud University secured the second position, and Qatar University ranked third.
King Abdulaziz University, which had occupied the first position in the previous year, slipped to fifth place after maintaining the top spot for four consecutive years. Egypt has 36 universities listed, followed by Saudi Arabia with 34, and Iraq with 24.
Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President, pointed out the Arab Region’s growing academic reputation and emphasized the increased competition in higher education. He also mentioned that this year’s ranking includes more Arab universities than ever before, indicating intense competition in the region to excel in higher education and offer a wider variety of specialized fields.
Top Middle East Universities
In the top 20 universities list, the American University of Beirut moved up to fourth place from fifth last year. The United Arab Emirates University and Khalifa University of Science and Technology retained their sixth and seventh positions, respectively. The American University in Sharjah climbed to eighth place from ninth. The University of Jordan is now in the ninth position, up from the tenth, while Sultan Qaboos University fell to tenth place from eighth.
