A breathtaking mosaic mural in Hatta – a timeless homage to an enduring legacy!

Eid Al Etihad

A stunning piece of public art, the world’s largest mosaic artwork, has been unveiled in Hatta ahead of the UAE National Day celebrations. Known as the Zayed and Rashid Mural, the massive 2,198.7-square-metre mosaic is located on the slope of the Hatta Dam Waterfalls.

Comprising over 1.2 million marble pieces, the mosaic pays tribute to the UAE’s founding fathers, Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid, depicted smiling together. The artwork serves as a powerful symbol of their enduring legacy and the unity of the UAE.

This extraordinary installation was commissioned by Brand Dubai, the creative arm of the Government of Dubai Media Office, in collaboration with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). It celebrates the 53rd anniversary of the UAE’s formation, coinciding with National Day and Flag Day festivities.

It has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest mosaic artwork, adding yet another remarkable achievement to Dubai’s list of records.

The mosaic mural in Hatta, a public art project led by Russian artist Sergey Korbasov, is a remarkable labour of love. Over 100 local and international artisans collaborated to handcraft the artwork using 1.2 million individual pieces. The massive mural, set against the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains, took more than four months to complete.

The launch is part of the #ZayedAndRashid campaign, commemorating significant national events from Flag Day on November 3 to the 53rd Eid Al Etihad on December 2 this year.

Mona Al Marri, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office, said that the project is part of ongoing public art initiatives in Dubai.

She said: “Guided by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to transform Dubai into an open-air museum that conveys the city’s rich heritage and creative spirit, we continue to develop public art initiatives that embody our deep pride in the nation’s achievements and our commitment to the vision of the UAE’s founding fathers.

“The Zayed and Rashid Mural at Hatta Dam is a tribute to the nation’s cultural identity and history, featuring the historic images of Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid, whose leadership laid the foundation for the UAE’s progress.

“This project stands as a testament to the power of art to inspire future generations, and reinforce the enduring values that have shaped our nation.”
