A huge new bridge has been opened in Dubai on Sunday, June 9, expected to significantly reduce city traffic.
The two-lane bridge spans 666 meters and can accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour.
Traffic in Dubai remains an issue, and this bridge is part of a major road project aimed at reducing travel times.
The bridge is part of the Garn Al Sabhka-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Intersection Improvement Project, now 90 percent complete.
It will separate traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to the entrances of Jumeirah Golf Estate and Dubai Production City.
The entire project will include the construction of four bridges, totaling 2,874 meters in length and accommodating 17,600 vehicles per hour. It constitutes a “crucial link” between the Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed roads, easing the traffic flow among Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed, First Al Khail, and Al Asayel roads.
The project has become essential due to Dubai’s continuous development and to meet the demands of urban growth and a rising population.
It will involve 7km of road work, including enhancements to surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. The plans also include the construction of streetlights, traffic systems, stormwater drainage networks, and irrigation systems.

“Upon completion, the project will reduce the distance and travel time from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Deira by 40 per cent, from 20 to 12 minutes during peak hours. It will also decrease the journey time for motorists travelling from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading towards Al Yalayes Street in the direction of Jebel Ali Port by 70 per cent, from 21 minutes to seven minutes.” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA.
Three other bridges
The project also includes a 943-meter bridge at the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street, capable of handling 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Another bridge is 601 meters long, serving traffic on Garn Al Sabkha Street with an estimated capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
The final bridge is 664 meters long, designed to ease traffic flow heading north to Al Yalayes Street towards Jebel Ali Port, with an estimated capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
