A recent UAE cabinet resolution has established a standardized pricing structure for charging electric vehicles (EVs) across the country. According to the updated fee structure, service providers must charge a minimum of Dh1.20 plus VAT per kWh for ‘express’ charging and a minimum of Dh0.70 plus VAT per kWh for ‘slow’ charging.
At the moment, the cost of charging an electric vehicle can vary significantly, as charging stations offer different rates, with some providing the service for free.
This initiative is part of the government’s push to standardize and regulate EV charging infrastructure. The Council of Ministers will continue to have the power to modify these fees as needed, allowing for potential changes, additions, or removals in the pricing structure.
The exact date you’ll notice these changes while charging your car isn’t specified, but the Cabinet’s resolution indicates that the new pricing will take effect 60 days after being published in the Official Gazette. This is based on Cabinet Resolution No. 81 published in the Official Gazette on July 8.
According to legal expert Abdulrahman Nabhan, this means the decision will be effective starting September 6, as reported by the Khaleej Times.
The adjustment to the fee structure is part of the UAE government’s initiative to regulate EV charging, much like how petrol prices are controlled.
