The Dubai Government Human Resources Department announced via UAE BARQ on Wednesday evening, August 7, the pilot launch of the “Our Summer is Flexible” initiative, which implements flexible working hours for government employees during the hot summer months.
As part of the initiative, they will be introducing a trial four-day work week with shorter hours for government workers. Beginning on Monday, August 12, and continuing until Monday, September 30, employees in 15 government entities will work reduced hours from Monday to Thursday, resulting in more than a month of three-day weekends.
During the trial period, government workers will work only seven hours a day, four days a week, with Fridays as an additional day off.
Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, director-general of the DGHR Department, stated through the government news agency WAM that the announcement supports a better work-life balance.
“We are thrilled to announce that DGHR will be launching the ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative, in line with our long-standing efforts to nurture a flexible work environment that promotes the work-life balance of government employees, in accordance with best international practices.
“The launch will also further our vision to empower human resources by developing smart solutions and innovative policies to uplift Dubai’s competitiveness.
“The initiative aims to enhance employees’ quality of life and promote sustainable use of government resources, positioning Dubai as the ideal city for a superior lifestyle,” he added.
Staff were surveyed about summer working hours, and the proposals to reduce office time in August and September received strong support, according to state news agency WAM. The human resources department will review the feedback and observations to make final recommendations on whether the pilot program should become a permanent summer policy.
This announcement aligns with a directive from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, aimed at making Dubai the world’s top city to live in.
In May, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, endorsed the Quality of Life Strategy, which includes plans to increase beach cycling tracks by 300 percent, extend night swimming beaches by 60 percent, and create new beaches specifically for women.
